The Client
Platinum has proudly partnered with this Manchester-based SME for over a decade, supporting their growth by placing key talent across finance and business support functions. Operating within the construction sector, the business has a turnover of c.£20 million.
The Brief
Appoint a Financial Controller who could be developed into a Finance Director within 12–18 months. This was part of a planned succession strategy, as the Finance Director was transitioning into a silent partner role through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).
Key requirements for the role included:
- Relevant industry experience
- Professional qualifications
- Team leadership experience
- Exposure to regulated working environment
The Process
From the outset, our goal was to make the recruitment journey as seamless as possible for the client — while ensuring they had access to the best talent in the market.
The process involved Cameron and Amber holding a strategy session with the client’s leadership team to understand both the current needs and future direction of the business.
Amber then launched a multi-channel sourcing campaign, while also leveraging our CRM to build a targeted shortlist of candidates.
After initial conversations, it became clear that candidates at the original salary level didn’t quite meet expectations in terms of seniority, strategic thinking and leadership presence.
We advised the client to increase the budget and consider candidates with deeper experience — particularly those already operating at a senior level within the industry.
The impact was immediate. The client quickly recognised the added value and leadership presence these candidates brought — validating the decision to adjust the brief. Six candidates were invited to interview with two progressing to the final stage.
This collaborative and consultative approach ultimately led to a successful hire who not only met but exceeded the original expectations.
Sourcing Strategy
To attract the right talent, we implemented a multi-channel sourcing campaign:
- Job posts across multiple platforms
- Direct outreach via LinkedIn Recruiter and our internal CRM
- Targeted searches across job boards
- 6 invited to interview, 2 final stage & 1 offer
Offer & Acceptance
The successful candidate brought a depth of experience, along with a strong track record in team leadership and strategic financial management. Aided by their personality it made a perfect culture fit. Recognising the whole value, he was offered the Financial Controller role positioning him as a key figure in the business’s future.
Following pre-employment checks, the candidate was formally appointed, and our aftercare process was completed to ensure a smooth transition. The individual is now fully in situ, already making a positive impact within the finance function and contributing to the company’s long-term strategic goals.
